If this was the year you were going to start your new website, have you? Why are you delaying?
You might think you have a good reason to put off the new website you were planning, but we’re here to tell you 10 very good reasons why putting it off isn’t a good idea.
Technology moves faster than our thought processes
The ‘going to press’ marketing mentality, or ‘countdown to launch’ isn’t a thing when it comes to website, although it still sticks. Technology evolves quick, and websites are not static ‘magazine’ sets any longer, so that idea a website must be perfect to become public isn’t relevant these days.
You need leads from your website and the sooner you can get them, the better. While you might be stuck on a certain idea for your website, the technology is moving rapidly around you onto the next thing.
It’s best to move now, even though you may feel you’re not ready. Here’s why.
1. Your return on investment will arrive quicker
It’s highly likely your website will generate leads even in a not-so-perfect state. If this is a better situation than you’re in now – press on and soft-launch it so you can start reaping the benefits sooner rather than later, or not at all. Even more so if you’ve already paid out part/all of the developer fees for the site.
2. Nobody cares, except you, that it’s not finished
Sorry to point it out, but your website is only precious to you and perhaps your internal audience or colleagues. Customers care about what they see, or don’t see, in front of them. They aren’t emotionally attached to your website and are not affected by its presence in the same way you are.
They’d rather have an unfinished website that’s giving them what they want than an old website doing nothing for them at all.
3. You’ll get taken more seriously
A launch of a website, even when it’s not finished, makes all those involved sit up quicker. Suddenly your board, suppliers, customers, team, etc. takes you seriously. You’ve put your money where your mouth is and launched – this is really something and gets everyone urgently behind the wheel where necessary.
4. The next phase will come quicker
Leading on from the previous point, that new content you needed writing, images, features, backend system, etc. all those content writers, photographers and designers are now working like crazy to get on with the next phase, instead of languishing in a ‘they’ll never launch’ state.
5. Behold the data!
No launch – no insights. Launch it now and you’ll start to get the data you need to be able to start planning the next phase, not to mention business goals. Don’t underestimate how much you need the intelligence from your online presence to be able to plan your business journey.
6. Your website isn’t a novel
No author would launch a novel part finished. But a website isn’t a novel, it’s a moveable feast of a thing that should adapt to an ever-changing digital environment. If there’s a mistake or glitch in it, you don’t need to live with the shame of it forever, it can be fixed! With that reassuring knowledge – go ahead and launch!
7. When did versions ever stop at 1?
Not even Apple launch perfect versions of there software, so why should you worry? You’re on a path to improvement, not under pressure to turnout perfection from the start – and that’s the same for every single one of us.
8. You don’t want to be the ‘one that never launched’
If you have competitors, they’re moving to launch ahead of you and will likely succeed if you’re delaying for the sake of perfection. If you have new ways of doing things and insights to offer, act now before they steal the limelight and beat you to it.
9. Don’t waste budget
If your website is part-built, you’re likely paying for the platform, so delaying is only going to extend this cost and put pressure on the budget you set at the start.
10. Don’t break your promises
Can you hear yourself recently telling people you were going to launch? They’re still waiting… maybe. They’ll only wait so long so stick to your word and do it.
