What is on-page SEO and what you can you do to improve your website’s visibility? There are a number of things you can do with your website’s page content alone that will improve your ranking, that are simply to do with being clear and better organised with your information.
Don’t we all understand information better when it’s clearly organised and written? Search engines are only looking for you to clarify what you mean to your browsers so they can help then find you more easily. Here are just some of the simpler things you can do with your website to ensure clarity and better SEO.
Title tags
A title tag defines the title of your page and is one of the most important on-page factors for SEO. It isn’t a meta tag, which is optional. A title tag is necessary for W3C standards; search engines need title tags to know what the page is about and anticipate its content.
Title tags must include your main keywords, be in natural language (not stuffed with lots of keywords artificially) and be ideally 50-60 character long, including spaces. A common, simple format, for example, might be: main keyword - second keyword | third keyword or keyword | company name | location
Meta descriptions
A meta description acts as an advert for your site, compelling your readers to click through because you are promising the information they are looking for. The page then needs to provide that information to prevent them bouncing quickly off. The description must be accurate to avoid browser disappointment.
Meta descriptions must be 70-160 characters long and contain accurate keywords that reflect your browsers’ queries and communicate your value to them. Be specific about what it you are providing to them in your page, and what they can gain by clicking through. Write your description in clear, compelling language, for example: Fed up of trying to find out what you really need to do to improve your SEO? Read our Ultimate Guide to SEO Success.
Use HTML headings
Make sure you use headings to organise content on your page, starting with H1 through to H6 for subheadings, in a clear hierarchical structure. Don’t jump from H1 to H3 as this breaks with the structure required for SEO and will reflect badly on you.
Every page must have a H1 heading and must include your important keyword, but not be stuffed with keywords. Headings are there to organise your content for the reader and the search engine, to direct the flow of information and signpost helpfully.
