Cultrix hosting allows you to setup and run your own backups within the cPanel control panel. For a small, additional annual charge Cultrix will add your account to the automated daily backups and store them securely in a secondary datacentre.
We add the account onto the automated backup list, the backups are stored on a remote server in a datacentre different to where the hosted servers are located for maximum resilience.
How do we determine when to make backups?
The backup runs every day and stores 3 full backups as follows:
- Creates a monthly backup if the existing monthly backup is more than 29 days old.
- Creates a weekly backup if the existing weekly backups is more than 6 days old.
- Creates a daily backup if the existing daily backups is more than 12 hours old.
What is stored in a backup?
The account's home directory contents, databases, email filters and forwarders, and DNS records are copied and stored.
Which files are included in a cPanel user's backup?
After we enable the backup, the process runs as the cPanel user whose data it is backing up. Anything a user cannot access is not backed up. This means:
- All of the files owned by the user are included in the backup.
- Files the user does not own but has access to are included in the backup.
- Files the user does not own and cannot access are not included in the backup — even if they are stored in the user's home directory.
Where are backups stored?
We store the backups on the Cultrix Cloud which is in a Tier 3 datacentre and is itself backed up. The Cultrix Cloud is incredibly secure and everything is replicated across multiple locations meaning that even if the datacentre was destroyed, the entire system is duplicated in a secondary location. More information on the Cultrix Cloud can be found at www.cultrix.co.uk/cloud.
How do I gain access to my backups?
To request a full or part restore, or just to gain access to the backup file for your own interrogation, simply email support@cultrix.co.uk with your request. Backups are stored as a tarball file (.tar.gz) which can be unzipped using something like 7-zip (www.7-zip.org).
