‘Cloud’ is something of an industry buzzword at the moment and it’s led to some confusion and myth-making. So we at Cultrix, as your IT superheroes, are here to dispel those myths and clear some things up about the cloud for you.
1: You MUST have the cloud.
Wrong. It’s not the ideal path for every business. However, for many it solves lots of problems and allows staff to be more flexible in the way they work. Most businesses will use some form of cloud without even realising it, whether that be online file storage or web-based email. For some people the cloud is exactly what they need, for others it’s essential for running their business. It really depends on how your particular business works. If you think that cloud might benefit you then please give Dawn, here at our office, a call and she’ll talk you through it.
2: You must ALWAYS be connected to the internet.
There’s some truth in this. If you’re using a virtual desktop environment you will need to have an internet connection for it to work. However, if you’re using Microsoft Office 365 or Google Apps cloud services that’s not strictly true.
Google Apps and Microsoft Office Pro Plus work offline. For document creation and loading emails whilst you’re offline, however, you won’t be able to sync new data from cloud storage, be able to send or revive emails or use Lync or Google Hangouts, or other services requiring an internet connection to sync between you and the cloud.
In this day and age however, an internet outage is as likely as a power outage, and both cause similar issues. But, for working on unreliable connections (for example, on the train) you’ll be fine if you’re using Office 365 Pro Plus or Google Apps
3: Your data will be less secure with cloud.
In a virtual desktop environment your data is never on the device you’re using. It’s on a server in a secure centre. This prevents your data being stolen from your device, say, if your laptop goes missing. Using cloud solutions such as Google Apps and Microsoft Office 365 means that all your data is stored securely in Google’s or Microsoft’s servers and this means you no longer need USB memory sticks, which is, of course, the number one cause of a data breach.
