Is it time to question what’s holding you back from cloud? Lack of business owner confidence in cloud is real.
As we don’t shy away from the issues here at Cultrix, and genuinely want to help businesses get more out of IT, we take a look at some of the reasons why there can be a confidence issue when it comes to moving to the cloud.
The cloud is too good to be true
We are conditioned to believe that if something is just too good, then it can’t be true; there must be a catch. Cloud is THE way to scale business while cutting costs. It may seem too good to be true, but it is true, and you can believe it.
You can’t give up control
This is a big one. If you’ve spent you’re entire working life carefully feeding data into physical objects such as hard drives and discs, then labelling those discs, and backing up those drives, it will feel pretty strange to not do those things.
(By the way, you still need to do backups even if you are in the cloud.)
Ownership and control are very different with the cloud. IT is very much a shared service these days, and certainly with the cloud. With the cloud, the only thing between operators and infrastructure is software. It’s a different mindset and one that is more about collaboration and flow, rather than lock and key.
You’ll get used to it.
IT is now an operating expense?!
Yes. Cloud is a monthly cost based on usage, rather than a capital investment. This is how you save money. But it can be a lot for businesses to get their head around.
Cloud is very much the embodiment of IT as a shared service, using what you need every month, with no need for hefty investments in infrastructure. Once business owners see that it is a lot easier to attribute this monthly operating cost to different departments and projects, the penny drops.
Hefty capital costs are always difficult to divide up in an organisation. IT as operating costs, reflect much better the shared service that it is, and is therefore easier to account for.
There are so many cloud courses, I must need one
It’s true; courses on cloud tech everywhere. But it doesn’t mean you need one, and we guarantee most of them will not go further than the basics. You can learn the basics in articles like these, and many others on the internet, or just by working with a reputable provider and talking to them about what you need.
Remember, a good cloud provider will talk to you about the cloud, possibly longer than you may want them to! And you’ll learn far more by talking about cloud in terms that are relevant to your business goals.
You can’t know everything there is to know about the cloud. But you should know how it can benefit your business. Your cloud provider can give you that knowledge, confidence and so much more. And if you’re still feeling less than cloud-confident, talk to them about the issues on your mind.
Cloud-confidence is very much a mindset for the new way of business IT. We can help you embrace it.
