Sometimes it's my job to tell you, "you have an ugly baby"
Ok. You’ve had your website for years and you’re very attached to it. However long ago, you poured lots of time and energy into it, and, you may think, it’s served you well. But when you ask web experts, like Cultrix, to look at your online presence and make a judgement as to whether it’s serving your business, it might be the case that you get a response that’s less than complimentary.
"What do you mean?!" Was the recent, and unexpected reaction I received from one client upon assessing their website at their request. It was a shock to them. But the client genuinely believed that their website, which had been designed in the 90s, was still doing its job.
It was the first time I'd asked a customer if they wanted more new business and they said, "No". They just wanted to do business with the people they knew already and for their 'ugly baby' to remain online so these select, few customers didn't think they'd gone bust.
You may wonder why they contacted us in the first place. But it was because their current website host had got in touch to say they were turning off the server that made their website work, because theirs was the only website left on there!
The website didn't have a login area so I couldn't even argue the case about storing client data on a supported system. But, and this is serious, it was so old that an adequately-equipped hacker could have defaced it. On a grave note, reputationally it is a disaster if your website is so insecure it can be hacked; it puts your whole company in the category of ‘unreliable’ in a customer’s mind.
Cultrix will always be honest, and tell you how and why your website is ugly, insecure and not serving your business. It’s our job, and one we take seriously. So, even though your old website might look ok, and you don’t need any more customers, it reflects on your organisation's ability to run a secure operation, and where you are doing so, safely storing your clients’ data. Even if you aren't interested in new clients, losing existing ones has the potential to become a much bigger issue.
