No one understands more than I how scary change can be. I’ll admit, before I worked at Cultrix, I liked things to be familiar. I liked how my old version of Outlook displayed my emails and I would do anything to avoid a phone upgrade.
But, it’s fair to say, Shaun didn’t employ me for my grasp of technology and who could have blamed him looking back?! I remember my first day, walking into the office; I felt like I was in a scene from Back to the Future.
I had two choices: I could run and hide in a cupboard or climb out of the window. While I was pondering the nature of my escape, I heard someone say:
“Good morning Dawn. Here’s a smart phone for you.”
“What’s wrong with the phone I have?”
“I don’t think you can get emails on that can you?”
The next ten minutes were terrifying as the cool, collected technical person calmly showed me all the things I could do with my new smart phone. They had no idea that I was busy trying to hide my fear and look interested all at the same time.
Looking back, this is hilarious. It was literally only ten minutes until I could access my emails and contacts from anywhere in the world, create a quote, take a picture and access the internet. And after that, I couldn’t put the thing down. I quickly became obsessed. Who needs candy crush when you have live emails to hand?
Over the coming weeks, I slowly picked the processes up for each of the Cultrix systems and felt more confident with my new working environment. UNTIL! I arrived one morning to find two monitors on my desk where there had previously been one. My hair stood on end and my brain went into overdrive.
“I can’t cope with this! Why do you keep changing things?!”
I reluctantly booted up and took a deep breath.
Two hours later.
“Wow. This is amazing. I can have different systems open at the same time!”
How easy it was to look at sales request emails on one monitor and create a quote on the other. Quotes were flying out. I wasn’t slow anymore and my productivity was far higher than it had been. Who would have thought something so small could make such a huge difference to my working day?
A few months down the line and Shaun Wilders, MD, was at it again. I logged into my emails and was shocked to find I had been migrated to Office 365 overnight! It looked so different. I couldn’t find anything. My anxiety levels were climbing.
“Why do you always do this when I am really busy?”
“Just give it time.” Came the calm reply.
Sure enough, within a couple of days I had worked everything out with some pointers from our technical team and started to realise just how much time I was saving, with the search function alone.
You can, no doubt, see the pattern forming, and likely guess what I am going to say next. That these small changes, although terrifying at first, are needed to alter the bigger picture and make the truly transformational changes that make businesses more profitable.
“Take care of the little things and the big things will take care of themselves,” we always say at Cultrix.
It was important for me, as a Cultrix team member, to be thrown in at the deep end, to feel what it’s like from a customer’s point of view. Some of us really don’t like change, but it’s never as bad as you think and can make a world of difference to your productivity, leading to more sales, which in turn increase your profit levels and allow for future bigger changes.
